Chion-in is the head temple of Jodo Shu, located in Higashiyama, Kyoto city.

The temple was established to honor Honen, the founder of Jodo Shu of Bhuddism who spent last half of his life and passed away in this area.

It is said that the temple attained the position as Chion-in in the late Muromachi period.

The huge temple was built in the late Edo period by the Tokugawa family, who entered the priesthood of Jodo Shu through the generations.

The temple has been worshiped widely from Tokugawa Shogun family to the common people, and is still popular for the people in Kyoto, affectionately called as "Choin-san" or "Chioin-san".

A master carpenter Hidari Jingoro reconstructed the Mieido of the Chion-in that suffered from several fires in the Edo period. It is said that he left the umbrella to expel the evil spirits when he finished rebuilding the temple.

Another legend says that a white fox left the umbrella as a sign of gratitude to Reigan Shonin, who built a new nest for the fox, and the fox also promised to guard Chion-in from fire.

The major repair of the Mieido was proposed in 2011 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of Honen, and currently in the middle of repair that will last for nearly 8 years. Therefore the Mieido is hidden under the cover, and we cannot see the "wasure-gasa" for a while.

The umbrella will be in the same position when the major repair is finished. Until then, let’s think about how the wagasa was left behind back then, while enjoying the Kyoto’s confectionary created from the legend of "wasure-gasa".
